‘Foolish Violation’: Trump Blames Tehran For Strike On Ship Near Hormuz, Claims US Downed Multiple Iranian Drones

United States President Donald Trump on Friday blamed Iran for the incident near the Strait of Hormuz, saying American forces shot down three Iranian drones after one of them struck a commercial cargo ship. He described the attack as a “foolish” violation of the ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Trump Blames Iran After Strike On Ships Near Hormuz

In a post on Truth Social, Trump alleged that Iran launched four one-way attack drones targetting vessels passing through the strategically important waterway. He claimed that one of the drones struck the upper deck of a large cargo vessel, causing damage. However, he added that the ship was still able to continue its journey. Trump further said that US forces shot down three other drones.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran shot at least four One Way Attack Drones at Ships transversing the Strait of Hormuz. One of the Drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive Cargo Carrying Ship. Damage was done, but the Ship was able to proceed on its way. We knocked down three other Drones. Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Ship Attacked In Hormuz

Notably, a ship near the coast of Oman was attacked on Thursday. Reports claimed that a vessel, identified as Singapore-flagged Ever Lovely, travelling along the newly designated corridor was struck by an Iranian missile. Following the attack, the UN shipping agency paused its evacuation initiative to get hundreds of ships and seafarers out through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran On Hormuz

Despite Trump’s claim, Iran has not confirmed the attack and has instead strongly criticised recent statements made by the US and several Gulf countries. Earlier, Tehran accused Washington and six Gulf states of issuing “interventionist, irresponsible and provocative” remarks after they rejected Iran’s claim that it could impose tolls on ships passing through the Strait.

Iran has reiterated that safe passage through the Strait cannot be guaranteed under unclear arrangements that ignore its role as a coastal state. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on X that decisions about the Strait must consider Iran’s position and interests.
