US President Donald Trump used his address at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York to sharply criticise China, India, and even NATO allies, accusing them of indirectly fueling Russia’s war in Ukraine by continuing energy trade with Moscow.
“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” Trump declared before world leaders. He argued that these purchases provide Moscow with the financial resources needed to sustain its military campaign, now into its fourth year.
Criticism Of NATO Countries
Beyond China and India, Trump also lashed out at European nations, including NATO members, accusing them of hypocrisy. “I found out a week ago that even NATO nations are funding a war. Even NATO countries have not cut off Russian energy. It’s embarrassing to them, and it was very embarrassing to them when I found out about it,” he said.
Trump demanded that European nations “immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia”, warning that otherwise “we’re all wasting a lot of time.”
Tariffs On India
In one of his strongest policy announcements, Trump revealed that his administration has imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India as a penalty for its Russian oil imports, bringing the total levies on New Delhi to 50 percent, among the highest faced by any country.
India responded by calling the tariffs “unjustified and unreasonable”, emphasising that as a major economy, it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.
Blaming Poor Leadership For Prolonged War
Trump argued that the Ukraine war would not have started had he remained in office. He added that the conflict, which should have been resolved in days due to his “good relationship with President Putin,” has dragged on for over three years because of what he called “poor leadership.”
“Of the seven wars that I stopped, I thought Ukraine would be the easiest,” Trump said. “It should have taken a matter of days, certainly less than a week. But they have been fighting for three and a half years.”
