US President Donald Trump has fiercely defended the effectiveness of American airstrikes on Iran's underground nuclear facilities, claiming they caused unprecedented destruction and effectively halted Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. In a Sunday interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Trump dismissed reports suggesting the attacks merely set back Iran’s program by a few months.

Trump described the strikes in dramatic terms, stating, “The bomb went through it like it was butter, absolute butter. It was obliterated like nobody's ever seen before. And that meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time.” He specifically referred to the Fordow nuclear enrichment facility, one of Iran’s most fortified sites, saying that it had been reduced to “just thousands of tons of rock.”

Critics Dismissed As “Fake News”

“A lot of people say, ‘Do you think they’re going to start again?’ I said the last thing they want to do right now is think about nuclear,” Trump said, emphasising the psychological and physical blow dealt to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Trump accused media outlets of spreading “fake news” for questioning the success of the military operation. He insisted there was no intelligence indicating Iran had managed to move highly enriched uranium out of Fordow before the attack, contrary to Israeli reports cited by The New York Times.

Surprise Attack And Future Threats

Revealing more about the operation, Trump emphasised the difficulty and secrecy involved in launching the strikes: “It’s very heavy, very dangerous. We didn’t give them much notice. They didn’t know we were coming until just then.” He said the element of surprise was key, particularly because the Fordow site is located beneath a granite mountain, long believed to be impenetrable.

Trump also warned that he would “absolutely” consider authorising future strikes if Iran resumed uranium enrichment to dangerous levels. “Without question, we would act again,” he told reporters at the White House.

The strikes, launched nine days after Israel’s own military operations on June 13, targeted Iran’s top three nuclear sites, Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The joint US-Israeli operation was viewed as a severe blow to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, though international assessments have varied on the long-term impact.
