US President Donald Trump hinted that a major trade agreement with China, including a deal involving TikTok, may have been reached. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the “big Trade Meeting in Europe” between the US and China “has gone VERY WELL” and is concluding shortly. He added that the deal involves a “certain” company that young Americans are eager to see preserved and stated he would speak with President Xi on Friday, emphasising that the US-China relationship “remains a very strong one.”
TikTok Negotiations In Madrid
The announcement comes amid talks in Madrid, where American and Chinese officials have been negotiating both trade and the future of TikTok in the United States. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that a “framework for a TikTok deal” has been struck, just days ahead of a Wednesday deadline that could have forced ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell its US operations or face a potential ban.
Key Issues And National Security Concerns
Bessent offered few details about the agreement but noted that key commercial terms had been agreed upon. On one critical issue, the control of TikTok’s algorithm, which determines what content users see, Bessent said, “We’re not going to talk about the commercial teams of the deal. It’s between two private parties, but the commercial terms have been agreed upon.” He emphasised that the agreement is designed to be fair for China while ensuring US national security concerns are fully respected.
Speaking from Madrid, Bessent said, “We were very focused on TikTok and making sure that it was a deal that is fair for the Chinese and completely respects US national security concerns, and that’s the deal we reached.” He added that the US aims to provide a fair investment environment for Chinese companies while keeping national security as the top priority.
The TikTok negotiations come amid broader US-China tensions. Just prior to Bessent’s remarks, China announced that tech giant Nvidia had violated anti-trust laws regarding a 2020 deal. The TikTok talks have been ongoing since July, when Trump said the US “pretty much” had an agreement on the sale of the app.
