US President Donald Trump on Wednesday revealed that he had held a “very productive” two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on ways to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The call took place a day before Trump is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House to discuss potential military aid, including the possibility of providing Ukraine with Tomahawk long-range missiles.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said, “I have just concluded my telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin, and it was a very productive one. President Putin congratulated me and the United States on the Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East, something that, he said, has been dreamed of for centuries.” Trump added that the Middle East peace achievement could help advance negotiations to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

High-Level Advisory Meetings Planned

Trump also mentioned discussions on trade between the US and Russia once hostilities conclude. According to the Trump, both countries’ “high-level advisors” will meet next week, led on the US side by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with a meeting location to be determined. Following these discussions, Trump said he and Putin would meet in Budapest, Hungary, to attempt to bring the “inglorious” war to an end.

White House And Russian Officials Praise Conversation

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the call as “good and productive,” echoing Trump’s remarks, and said further discussions will continue when Zelenskyy visits the Oval Office. “President Trump deserves great credit for pursuing peace negotiations so soon after brokering the Gaza ceasefire,” Leavitt said, emphasising the significance of the initiative. Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev also called the conversation “positive and productive,” noting that next steps were clearly outlined.

Global Leaders React

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomed the planned Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest, describing it as “great news for the peace-loving people of the world.” The planned discussions follow a previous Trump-Putin summit in Alaska in August, which yielded no tangible progress. While Trump attempted to organise a direct summit between Putin and Zelenskyy, the Russian leader declined the proposal at the time.

Trump expressed optimism about his recent call, stating, “I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation,” adding that he would brief Zelenskyy on the details during their Oval Office meeting. The US President’s peace push comes in the wake of his recent success in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, which he cited as a model for ending other international conflicts.
