US President Donald Trump turned a potentially awkward moment into a spectacle of humor during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). What began with a malfunctioning teleprompter and a faulty escalator quickly became fodder for Trump’s sharp wit, setting the stage for a speech that mixed comedy with sharp criticism of the UN’s role in global conflicts.

The President opened by pointing to a technical snag that left him briefly without a teleprompter. “I don’t mind making this speech without a teleprompter because the teleprompter is not working,” Trump quipped. “I can only say that whoever’s operating this teleprompter is in big trouble.” The remark earned laughter from the assembly as Trump held up a printed copy of his prepared remarks before the device began functioning again.

Before even beginning the substance of his address, Trump poked fun at the UN’s facilities. “All I got from the United Nations was an escalator on the way up that stopped in the middle! If the First Lady wasn’t in great shape, she would’ve fallen!” he said, drawing more chuckles. He concluded that his “two things” from the UN were “a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter.”

Turning To Serious Criticism

But Trump quickly shifted gears, using the malfunctions as a metaphor for what he described as the United Nations’ failure to perform its duties. “The United Nations wasn’t there for us,” he declared. “They weren’t there. I had to end wars myself instead of the UN. They didn’t even try to help in any of them.”

The President claimed credit for resolving conflicts across the globe, boasting that he had “ended seven wars in seven months,” saving countless lives. Among the conflicts he listed were tensions between India and Pakistan, hostilities between Congo and Rwanda, and even disputes involving Israel and Iran.

Questioning The Purpose of the UN

Trump pressed further, questioning the very purpose of the international body. “What is the purpose of the UN? It’s not even coming close to living up to that potential,” he said, insisting that world leaders have relied on US diplomatic interventions rather than UN mediation.
