US President Donald Trump expressed his condolences following the tragic crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 in Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of dozens. In a brief statement posted on social media, Trump called the incident a “horrible accident” and assured that the United States would extend any assistance necessary. “Anything we can do, we will do,” he stated, joining global leaders in mourning the loss and offering support to the affected families.
“The plane crash was terrible,” he said, adding, “I’ve already told them—anything we can do… we’ll be over there immediately,” said Trump.
The aircraft, which was operating as Flight AI 171, was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport when it crashed minutes after takeoff. Of the 242 people on board, over 200 are confirmed dead. The victims include 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian.
US Investigators To Assist In Crash Probe
In response to the international scale of the disaster, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced it would be sending a team of American investigators to India. The NTSB, responsible for civil transportation accident investigations, will work closely with Indian authorities to uncover the cause of the crash.
As per international aviation law under the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Annexe 13, the country where the crash occurs leads the investigation. However, nations such as the United States, where the aircraft was manufactured, are allowed to participate and provide technical support.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also confirmed its coordination with the NTSB. "We stand ready to launch a team immediately in coordination with the NTSB," a government statement said.
The severity of the accident was further illustrated by disturbing CCTV footage and videos shared by locals. The aircraft was seen plunging soon after takeoff before bursting into flames upon impact. A thick plume of smoke rose into the sky as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
