U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25 per cent tariff, along with additional penalties, on Indian imports starting August 1, 2025. The decision, framed as a response to India's high tariff regime and its growing role in the BRICS alliance, was unveiled during an interaction with ANI and further amplified on Trump's Truth Social platform.
Responding to a question by ANI on whether the US is open to talks with India, Trump said, “We are talking to them now. We’ll see what happens. India was the highest or just about the highest-tariff nation in the world…We are negotiating with India right now.”
He emphasised that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “a friend,” the trade relationship remains lopsided. “They sell a lot to us, but we don’t buy from them…because the tariff is so high,” Trump explained. “They are willing to cut it very substantially, but we’ll see what happens.”
BRICS And Dollar Factor
Trump also linked the tariffs to India’s participation in BRICS, a bloc often perceived as challenging US. dominance in global financial systems. “BRICS is basically a group of countries that are anti the United States and India is a member of that. It is an attack on the dollar, and we are not going to let anybody attack the dollar,” he warned.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the Indian export sector, with businesses and trade analysts warning of a potential economic fallout. While Trump claims the tariffs are intended to correct imbalances and protect US interests, critics argue that such aggressive measures could harm diplomatic and commercial ties.
Trump’s Justification On Truth Social
Earlier in the day, Trump posted a detailed message on Truth Social, elaborating on the rationale behind the tariffs. “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high…They also have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country," he wrote.
He further criticised India’s military and energy dealings with Russia, stating, "They are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!"
