In a significant move amid a series of executive orders, President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the "Gulf of America." The newly elected president also declared February 9 to be celebrated as "Gulf of America Day."
This decision comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Mexico, with the former threatening a 25 per cent tariff on Mexican imports in response to the illegal influx of migrants into American territory. The move prompted the Mexican government to deploy over 10,000 National Guard troops to do away with a trade war between the two nations.
The renaming was implemented following an executive order titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” which instructed the US Secretary of the Interior to finalise the name change within 30 days.
According to the White House, the executive order specifies that the newly named Gulf encompasses the “US Continental Shelf area, bounded to the northeast, north, and northwest by the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending out to the maritime boundary with Mexico and Cuba.”
