World leaders have voiced their concerns after US President Donald Trump announced sweeping global reciprocal tariffs on Thursday. The move, which includes a baseline 10 per cent tariff on all imports to the United States and higher duties on key trading partners, has sparked fears of escalating trade tensions.

Trump justified the decision by stating that it was necessary to protect American industries and workers. "With these tariffs, we are taking a stand for American farmers, manufacturers, and businesses that have been unfairly treated for too long," Trump said. However, world leaders have warned that such aggressive trade policies could have unintended consequences for global economic stability.

Ireland And EU Call For Diplomacy

Irish Trade Minister Simon Harris emphasised the need for a diplomatic solution, stating, "The EU and Ireland stand ready to find a negotiated solution with the US Negotiation and dialogue is always the best way forward."

Similarly, Manfred Weber, President of the European People's Party (EPP), the largest party in the European Parliament, expressed his disapproval of the tariffs. "To our American friends, today isn't liberation day - it's resentment day. Donald Trump's tariffs don't defend fair trade; they attack it out of fear and hurt both sides of the Atlantic. Europe stands united, ready to defend its interests, and open to fair, firm talks."

Meloni: Avoiding A Trade War

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni underscored the need for cooperation to prevent further economic strain. "We will do everything we can to work towards an agreement with the United States, with the goal of avoiding a trade war that would inevitably weaken the West in favor of other global players," she said.

Other Global Reactions

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned that the new tariffs would ultimately hurt the American people. "It is the American people who will pay the biggest price for these unjustified tariffs. This is why our government will not be seeking to impose reciprocal tariffs. We will not join a race to the bottom that leads to higher prices and slower growth."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez affirmed Spain’s commitment to protecting its economy while maintaining an open global trade stance. "Spain will protect its companies and workers and will continue to be committed to an open world."

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed opposition to rising trade barriers. "We don't want growing trade barriers. We don't want a trade war ... We want to find our way back to a path of trade and cooperation together with the US, so that people in our countries can enjoy a better life."
