Mike Waltz, the National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump, is set to step down from his position following a scandal that emerged from a security breach involving a Signal group chat. This incident, which occurred weeks ago, has cast a long shadow over the Trump administration's national security apparatus, leading to increased scrutiny of Waltz's leadership. The breach happened when Waltz "inadvertently" added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a private group chat that included top Trump administration officials, where highly sensitive military operations were being discussed.

Signal Chat Scandal

The Signal group chat, which included key figures such as Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Vice President JD Vance, involved confidential discussions surrounding US military operations targeting the Houthi militants in Yemen. The most concerning part of the breach was that Hegseth shared specific details about airstrike timings involving American warplanes and drones. These discussions were meant to be classified, and Goldberg’s unintentional inclusion in the chat exposed sensitive military plans to an external journalist.

The fallout from the Signal chat breach has led to both Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, stepping down from their positions. A source close to the situation confirmed their departures on May 1. While Waltz initially downplayed the incident, calling it a "mistake" and defending his actions, the breach prompted internal concerns over the security of US military operations. The situation worsened after revelations emerged that Hegseth had allegedly shared military details with his wife and brother through a separate Signal chat.

Political Pressure And Congressional Hearings

The incident sparked widespread backlash from lawmakers, who expressed concern over the compromised security of national defence operations. During House and Senate hearings, intelligence officials were questioned about the breach, further intensifying the pressure on Waltz and Wong to step down. Despite Trump’s initial defence of Waltz, stating that he would not be fired, the growing controversy left little room for Waltz to remain in his role.

Alex Wong’s Departure

Alongside Waltz, Alex Wong is also leaving his post as Deputy National Security Advisor. Wong, who has been a trusted aide to Trump throughout his first and current terms, played a significant role in shaping Asia-Pacific policy and strengthening international alliances.
