British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Sunday that the United Kingdom is formally recognising a Palestinian state, joining Canada and Australia in a historic move aimed at reviving hope for a two-state solution amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking amid rising humanitarian concerns, Starmer said the recognition is intended to keep alive the possibility of lasting peace. “To revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly as prime minister of this great country, that the United Kingdom formally recognises the state of Palestine,” he said. He emphasised that the move supports a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.

Albanese Confirm Palestine Recognition

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced that Australia formally recognies the independent and sovereign State of Palestine. The move acknowledges the long-held aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood and aligns with similar actions by Canada and the United Kingdom as part of a coordinated international effort to revive the two-state solution.

"Australia's recognition of Palestine today, alongside Canada and the United Kingdom, is part of a co-ordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages taken in the atrocities of October 7, 2023," said Albanese.

Australia emphasised that recognition is tied to the ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages from October 7, 2023, and commitments by the Palestinian Authority to democratic reforms, governance improvements, and recognition of Israel’s right to exist. The statement clarified that Hamas must have no role in Palestine.

Canada Becomes First G7 Nation To Recognise Palestine

Canada, the first G7 nation to recognise Palestine, also issued a statement highlighting ongoing Israeli policies in the region. Canadian officials criticised settlement expansion in the West Bank and cited the humanitarian toll in Gaza, stating that tens of thousands of civilians have died, over a million people have been displaced, and a preventable famine has occurred, violating international law.

“The current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established,” the statement said. Canada pledged partnership in building a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel, noting that the recognition is part of supporting a viable two-state solution.
