SEAL Team 6, the elite Navy unit that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011, successfully rescued a wounded US Air Force weapons systems officer deep inside Iran after his F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down on April 3, during the ongoing US-Iran-Israel war. Although the killing of the most wanted man in the world around 15 years ago was well-coordinated and executed after years of planning, the rescue mission in Iran was not an easy task, as the Iranian war machines were already in place, and tribal groups were pushed to hunt down the US airman left on Iranian soil.
The rescue had unfolded with near‑perfect precision. According to a report by news agency Reuters, US commandos slipped deep into Iran, undetected, scaled a 7,000‑foot ridge and pulled a stranded American weapons specialist to safety, moving him toward a secret rendezvous point before dawn on Sunday. Then everything stopped.
The dramatic rescue has been described as one of the most complex special operations missions in recent history, even larger in scale than the 2011 Abbottabad raid.
What happened with the US airman in Iran?
It began on April 3, a day that would test American resolve like never before. An F-15E Strike Eagle, America’s premier fighter jet, was shot down over Iran, marking the first US combat aircraft lost since the war erupted on February 28. Both crew members ejected into Iranian territory. The pilot was rescued within hours. But the weapons systems officer vanished into the mountains.

How did US airman survive 36 hours in Iranian mountains?
For more than 36 harrowing hours, he fought to stay alive, alone, hunted, armed with nothing but a pistol, a faint encrypted beacon. As per reports, these special commandos are well-trained with raw survival instincts. They use the SERE ( US Army Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) technique to survive in such a situation.
How did the ill-fated pilot make contact with the US?
The official said the airman established contact with the US military and authenticated himself - a critical step to ensure rescue forces were not walking into a trap. The CIA had run a deception campaign earlier, hoping to confuse Tehran by planting information inside Iran that US forces had already located the missing airman and were moving him before the operation took place, a senior Trump administration official said.
But the US military took additional steps, jamming electronics and bombing key roads around the location to prevent people from getting close, the US source familiar with the planning told Reuters.

Trump praises extraordinary rescue operation
President Trump hailed the mission as a major success, calling the airman a “brave warrior” who was hunted but is now expected to recover fully. The rescued officer was flown to safety in Kuwait.
"Over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in US History," Trump said in a statement, adding that the airman was injured, but "he will be just fine."
