The United States is stepping back from its mediator role in the current Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations, due tue lack of progress towards ending the brutal war. A State Department spokesperson on Thursday (local time) confirmed that the US will no longer "fly around the world at the drop of a hat" to arrange dialogue between the two warring nations.
US Won't Mediate Without Concrete Progress
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the US will "not be the mediators" anymore unless Kyiv and Moscow make significant moves toward peace. “Now is the time that they need to present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end. It’s going to be up to them,” Bruce said in a press conference as reported by the New York Post. She stated that although US is still committed to backing the peace initiative, it would no longer lead the effort unless substantial progress is made on the ground.

Bruce pointed out President Donald Trump's frustration with the pace of negotiations, stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin's words of peace have not been followed by concrete action. “We are watching Putin’s actions, not his words,” she added, implying that constant postponement of a firm timeline has undermined trust in Moscow's intentions. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio repeated similar sentiments. "It's going to be up to them to come to an agreement and stop this brutal, brutal conflict," Vance told Fox News' Special Report. Rubio, talking separately on Hannity, said that without an actual breakthrough, the US president might reconsider how much longer the administration will remain engaged with the talks.
US Military Aid Expiring, Future Assistance In Doubt
Bruce made the comments just a day after the US and Ukraine signed a significant mineral agreement, creating a joint investment fund. Washington, under the agreement, can include military hardware, training, and technology assistance to Ukrainian troops as part of its entry into an agreement. Though the pact is a major step towards economic cooperation between the two nations, it can serve to further estrange Russia.
On the other hand US military assistance that was authorized during the presidency of former President Joe Biden, runs out next month. The House being in Republican hands, it is uncertain whether new packages of military aid will be authorized. Even with uncertainties in official assistance, Ukraine continues to buy arms directly from American manufacturers. The State Department on Tuesday authorized for the sale of defense articles and services of at least 50 million USD.
