The National Independence Day Parade in Washington, DC, has been cancelled after an intense heat wave engulfed large parts of the United States, disrupting celebrations marking the country's 250th Independence Day.

The parade was scheduled to begin at 10:30 am local time on Saturday along Independence Avenue. However, organisers announced late Friday that the event would not go ahead due to concerns over dangerous weather conditions.

“This decision was made after extensive and careful consideration of the safety of our participants, spectators, and staff as the top priority,” NDTV quoted organisers. According to the event's website, the parade will not be rescheduled.

Extreme Heat Triggers Safety Concerns

The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning in Washington, DC, predicting that heat index values would rise to 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures where prolonged outdoor exposure is unsafe.

Even though temperatures near the scheduled start of the parade were forecast to be around 93 degrees F (34 degrees Celsius), humidity was expected to send the “feels like” temperature to nearly 100 F (38 degrees Celsius) before peaking later.

Heat Wave Disables Independence Day Activities

The announcement occurred amid a potent heat dome that has settled over the Eastern United States, pushing several large cities to over triple digits.

An estimated 197 million Americans across a region stretching from Kansas to Maine were placed under heat advisories or extreme heat warnings on Friday, according to the US Weather Prediction Centre.

Warnings or Heat Advisories on Friday

The prolonged heat has disrupted transportation, increased electricity demand due to heavy air-conditioner use, and forced organisers to rethink several public events linked to the Independence Day celebrations.

More Events Affected Across the Region

The Great American State Fair in DC shut its doors on Friday, briefly suspending operations in response to the intense heat and humidity. In a statement, organisers said the venue would remain closed until 5 pm to protect participants, staff, volunteers and attendees.

Capitol Fourth Concert to Go Ahead

Despite the weather, the annual Capitol Fourth Concert at the US Capitol complex will proceed as planned.

The US Capitol Police have advised those attending outdoor events to stay hydrated, carry plenty of drinking water and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
