US-Iran War Disrupts Hormuz Traffic: 220 Vessels Transited Waterway In March, Liquid Tankers Lead Crossings

US-Iran War: A total of 220 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz in March, with liquid tankers accounting for the largest share of traffic, according to MarineTraffic and Kpler data.

According to MarineTraffic and Kpler data, a total of 220 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz in March, with liquid tankers leading the crossings with 111 voyages, accounting for 51 per cent of the total, followed by 82 dry bulk vessels (37 per cent) and 27 LPG carriers (12 per cent).

No LNG shipments were recorded during the month.

Uneven Flow Of Ship Movements Through Strait Of Hormuz In March

According to the navigation data, the ship movements were heavily skewed toward west-to-east (out of the Gulf), accounting for 149 crossings, or 68 per cent of total traffic. East-to-west movements into the Gulf accounted for the remaining 32 per cent, highlighting an uneven flow pattern through one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.

Most vessels were either coming from or heading to Iran, while others were linked to the United Arab Emirates, India, China, or Saudi Arabia.

Importance Of Strait Of Hormuz

In peacetime, about one-fifth of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to news agency Reuters.

Since the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran began on February 28, tensions have escalated in the region. In retaliation, Iran has hit targets across the Gulf, halting shipping in the strait and sharply reducing vessel traffic.

French Vessel Exits Strait Of Hormuz For First Time Since War

In a major development, a container ship declaring French ownership successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz. The Maltese-flagged Kribi, operated by French maritime group CMA CGM, exited the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, marking the first known passage by a major European shipping company since the war began on February 28.
