US-Israel-Iran War: Amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East, the United States, Israel, and Iran have laid out maximalist positions to end the conflict that has already set the region ablaze and disrupted global energy markets. The conflict broke out on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran on Israel, American bases, and neighbouring Gulf states.
US Proposes 15-Point Ceasefire Plan To Iran Via Pakistan
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday sent a 15-point ceasefire plan to Iran via Pakistan, news agency Associated Press reported. However, the proposal has not been published, with the US administration declining to disclose the specifics of the plan.
According to a Reuters report citing Israeli cabinet sources, the plan includes:
- The removal of Iran's stocks of highly enriched uranium
- A complete halt to Iran's uranium enrichment program
- Restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program
- An end to Iran's support for regional allies, including Lebanon's Hezbollah
The White House on Wednesday issued a warning to Iran, stating that if Tehran refuses to accept the US proposal, the US will hit "harder than they have ever been hit before".
Iran Lays Out 5 Conditions In Response To US 15-Point Proposal
Speaking to Reuters, a senior Iranian official said that Iran's response to the US proposals on ending the war has so far been 'not positive,' though the plan is still under review. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Wednesday said that Iran is not negotiating directly with the United States, with messages being exchanged through intermediaries.
Iran on Wednesday laid out five conditions under which it would consider ending the war.
1. A complete end to what it describes as US and Israeli 'aggression and assassinations'.
2. Concrete safeguards to prevent any future military action against Iran.
3. Clear and assured compensation for losses and damages caused by the war.
4. An end to the war on all fronts and for every resistance group active across the region.
5. Formal recognition of Iran's sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, which it says is essential to ensuring compliance with any agreement.
Israel Sceptical Iran Will Agree To US Terms
A senior Israeli defence official on Wednesday said that Israel was sceptical that Iran would agree to the US terms, while also expressing concern that US President Donald Trump could make concessions. Speaking to Reuters, another source said that Israel wants any agreement to preserve its option to carry out pre-emptive strikes if necessary.
Israel's military spokesperson on Thursday said that the current aim was to continue to destroy Iran's military capabilities, emphasising that the country still has 'many more targets left.
