Vietnam Boat Tragedy: At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat carrying 32 Indian passengers capsized near Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island on Saturday. Twenty-one people, including 17 passengers and four crew members, were rescued and taken to hospitals, while two survivors remain in critical condition. Vietnamese authorities have completed the search and rescue operation and launched an investigation into the accident.

Vietnam PM Orders Investigation

Vietnam's Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and directed government agencies to provide the best possible medical treatment to those injured. He also instructed officials to investigate the accident and take strict action if any violations are found. According to local media reports, the Ministry of Public Security has been asked to determine the exact cause of the accident, while the Ministry of Construction has been directed to review safety measures for inland waterways.

Factors Under Scanner

The rescue operation has ended, and a detailed investigation is now underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Among the factors being examined include rough weather, strong waves, and possible mechanical failure. According to reports, the speedboat, operated by Ocean Pear Island Company, was travelling from Hon May Rut Islet to An Thoi Port with 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it capsized around 400 metres from the shore.

Visuals from the scene showed rescue teams and local residents performing CPR on tourists after they were pulled from the water. According to a statement by Vietnam's state news portal Vietnam.vn, the speedboat reportedly malfunctioned and capsized, while on its way to the port. They said rough sea conditions and high waves may have caused the accident. However, so far Vietnamese officials have not shared details about the suspected malfunction.

15 Indian Tourists Killed

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam has released the names of the 15 Indian nationals who lost their lives in the tragic speedboat accident. Sharing the list, the Embassy wrote, “It is with profound grief that we share the list of 15 Indian nationals who have lost their lives in the tragic boat accident near Phuc Quoc Island today. The list has been received from the Vietnamese authorities. Our prayers are with the families of the deceased. The Embassy and Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City remain available for any assistance. @cghcm.”

PM Modi Offers Condolences

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the tragedy, saying that he was extremely saddened to learn about the tragic news. "Extremely saddened to learn about the tragic news of a boat accident involving Indian nationals near Phu Quoc, Vietnam. My sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. My prayers for the early recovery of the injured survivors. Our Embassy and Consulate are providing all possible assistance. Our officials are also in close contact with the Vietnamese authorities," PM Modi wrote on X.
