Pakistan’s military spokesperson, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, has come under intense online criticism after a video from a recent press briefing appeared to show him winking at a female journalist while responding to a sensitive question about jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The clip, which has gone viral on X, captures a female journalist questioning Chaudhry about the increasingly harsh language being used for Khan, including references to him as a “national security threat”, “anti-state”, and allegedly acting “at the hands of Delhi”. She also asked whether this rhetoric signalled any shift in the military’s official stance.
In his response, Chaudhry added, “And add a fourth point, he is also a zehnimareez (mental patient),” before appearing to wink towards the journalist, a gesture that triggered widespread outrage.

Social Media Erupts In Anger
The moment sparked a wave of criticism online, with users accusing the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of unprofessional conduct. One user wrote, “Ahmed (Not) Sharif Chaudhary.” Another remarked, “A DG ISPR answering a woman journalist with a wink? That’s the burial of professionalism. Press conference tha ya sasta flirting?” Many users described the incident as a “new low” for the military’s public communications.

Political Context Behind The Controversy
The backlash comes amid heightened political tensions in Pakistan, with Imran Khan remaining in jail and his supporters locked in a long-running confrontation with the military establishment. Khan’s party has repeatedly accused the army of political engineering and silencing dissent, allegations the military has consistently denied.
Chaudhry has been one of the most visible faces of the Pakistan Army in recent months, regularly addressing the media on national security matters, including border tensions and regional security developments. The episode has now added to the growing public scrutiny of how the military communicates during politically sensitive times.
