Every year on World UFO Day, sky-watchers and alien enthusiasts unite to ask one profound question: Are we truly alone in the universe? While mainstream science often treads cautiously on the topic, a series of compelling UFO encounters from around the world challenge the boundaries of scepticism. Here are seven such incidents that suggest we may not be alone.
1. Aurora, Texas, USA (1897)
Long before "Roswell" entered public consciousness, the quiet town of Aurora witnessed a strange event. A cigar-shaped craft allegedly crashed on April 17, 1897. The pilot, believed to be "not of this world," was buried in the local cemetery. Though dismissed by sceptics as a hoax, many in the community still point to the incident as an early alien encounter.
2. Rendlesham Forest Incident, England (1980)
Often called "Britain’s Roswell," this baffling case occurred over several nights near RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk. US military personnel reported strange lights, a metallic craft, and even small humanoid beings. Lt. Col. Charles Halt submitted a now-famous memo to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), documenting what he saw. While the MoD played it down, witnesses continue to defend their claims, despite theories involving plasma or hallucinations.
3. Mount Rainier, Washington, USA (1947)
On June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold witnessed nine crescent-shaped flying objects while flying near Mount Rainier. Travelling at an estimated 1,932 km/h, the crafts defied known aerodynamics. Arnold’s description led the press to coin the term "flying saucer", igniting modern UFO fascination.
4. O’Hare Airport Incident, USA (2006)
In November 2006, United Airlines employees and pilots at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport saw a dark, metallic disc hovering above Gate C‑17. The object hovered silently before shooting into the sky, reportedly leaving a round hole in the cloud layer. The FAA attributed it to weather phenomena, but witnesses strongly disagreed.
5. The Phoenix Lights, Arizona, USA (1997)
Thousands of residents in Phoenix and surrounding areas reported seeing an enormous V-shaped object moving silently across the sky. The US military claimed it was flares from a training exercise. But video footage and consistent accounts from citizens continue to keep the mystery alive.
6. Tehran UFO Incident, Iran (1976)
Iranian fighter jets were scrambled after a bright object appeared over Tehran. When pilots approached, their equipment failed. The UFO evaded attempts to intercept it and vanished. The US Defence Intelligence Agency later noted the case as an example of credible pilot encounters.
7. USS Nimitz Tic Tac Encounter (2004)
US Navy pilots flying off the coast of California captured infrared footage of a Tic Tac-shaped object performing impossible aerial manoeuvres. The Pentagon confirmed the footage as authentic, though the object remains unidentified.
From cemeteries to runways, and from forests to battlefields, these encounters suggest Earth may not be the only planet with visitors.
