China has unveiled the world's highest bridge, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, in the Guizhou Province's mountainous region. Opened officially to traffic on Sunday, the engineering giant stands 625 meters (2,051 feet) above the Beipan River as the world's highest bridge deck. The bridge now overtakes the Beipanjiang Bridge, which stood at 565 meters and held the record until then.
The building, which took three years to build, measures 2,890 meters in length overall, with a central span of 1,420 meters. It also earns it the title of the world's longest span bridge in hilly terrain.
Travel Time Reduced From Hours To Minutes
Prior to the bridge, traveling over the Huajiang Grand Canyon took almost two hours of curvy mountain roads. The same trip now takes only two minutes with the new crossing. The bridge links the Liuzhi Special District and Anlong County, wrapping up a key expressway connection and enhancing regional connectivity.
Rising 625 meters above the river and set to be the world’s tallest, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou, SW China, unveiled a spectacular water curtain test, where sunlight and spray merged to paint a rainbow over the canyon. 🌈

State TV CCTV broadcast live drone video of cars crossing in the first vehicles. The view displayed the bridge's massive blue pylons shooting into clouds, as a group of onlookers, engineers, officials, and locals, watched to see the historic moment. Most felt proud, pointing out how the project represents technological milestone along with regional growth.
Engineering Achievement In Harsh Terrain
Work started in 2022, and crews struggled with the gigantic task since Guizhou's terrain is rugged. Nicknamed China's "bridge museum," the province has relied on ambitious infrastructure to link isolated mountain communities. More than 32,000 bridges have been constructed or are in the process of being built by Guizhou, reports the provincial transportation department. Almost half of the world's top 100 tallest bridges exist in Guizhou.
