In a fresh diplomatic flashpoint, far-right political commentator and Donald Trump ally Laura Loomer has called for the deportation of Xi Mingze, the daughter of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Loomer issued the call in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), heightening ongoing debates about Chinese presence in American universities. “Let’s go! Deport Xi Jinping’s daughter!” Loomer wrote, adding that Xi Mingze “lives in Massachusetts and went to Harvard,” while also claiming, without evidence, that Chinese security guards are protecting her in America. The post, addressed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has caused a great deal of public backlash, though Loomer had no evidence or sources to support her claims.
Loomer's comments follow increased scrutiny on Chinese students in the United States, with Republican lawmakers such as Senator Marco Rubio pushing policies seeking to stem Beijing's influence in American academics. Rubio recently declared new Chinese national visa restrictions on the nation's citizens, especially individuals with connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or who are studying sensitive subjects such as tech and AI. “The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the CCP,” Rubio wrote on X. A proposed bill titled the Protecting Higher Education from the Chinese Communist Party Act, which was submitted by Senator Eric Schmitt, seeks to exclude members of the CCP and their families from obtaining student visas altogether.
Who Is Xi Mingze?
Xi Mingze was born on June 25, 1992. She is the only child of Xi Jinping and renowned Chinese soprano Peng Liyuan. Xi is famous for her extreme privacy. She studied psychology and English at Harvard University from 2010 to 2014 under a pseudonym in order to maintain secrecy about her identity. While she is said to have gone back to China after graduation, rumors and social media hints that she may have resumed graduate studies at Harvard around 2019. Her present whereabouts are still a mystery, with no official confirmation from either US or Chinese authorities.
In 2022, former US Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler stated that Xi Mingze is now living in America, residing in the Cambridge, Massachusetts region. Comparable assertions were made by a Chinese commentator residing in America who reported she returned to the U.S. in 2019 as a research student. The Chinese foreign ministry responded to Loomer's accusations, but not directly. It criticised the overall US visa restrictions as "unreasonable" and accused Washington of employing "ideology and national security" as a cover to suppress academic exchange. “China firmly opposes this and has lodged representations with the US,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said during a briefing. China has strictly controlled information about Xi Mingze. In 2019, Niu Tengyu, a young Chinese tech worker, was jailed for 14 years after allegedly leaking personal details of Xi’s daughter on a website. Activists claim he was wrongly targeted, sparking human rights concerns.
As Laura Loomer's incitement to deport Xi Jinping's daughter goes viral and intensifies political tensions, there are no verifiable public documents available to prove that Xi Mingze is presently living in the US. The U.S. administration has also not announced her immigration status and possible deportation processes. With escalating US-China geopolitical tensions, especially in the education and technology industries, Xi Mingze's case is the flashpoint of an otherwise much larger ideological and diplomatic confrontation.
