Toyota has disclosed that Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) has been informed by the special investigation committee, led by Hiroshi Inoue, which was appointed to look into potential irregularities in certification regulations regarding improper domestic emissions certification of engines designed for forklifts and construction machinery. TICO was assigned by Toyota to develop diesel engines for vehicles.

As a response, TICO has chosen to temporarily stop sending out the engines that might be problematic. Toyota has also decided to halt shipments of vehicles equipped with these engines. The affected engines are used in 10 vehicle models globally which include the Fortuner, Innova, Hilux, LAND CRUISER 300 and Lexux LX500d. Due to this, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the Indian branch of the Japanese automaker, has suspended deliveries of Fortuner, Innova, and Hilux. Toyota mentioned that they are collaborating with relevant authorities to double check the data used for certifying these vehicles.

The investigation revealed irregularities in the certification testing of three diesel engine models for cars commissioned by Toyota to TICO. During the testing, the horsepower output was measured using ECUs with different software than what was used in mass production. This was done to achieve smoother and less varied results. However, Toyota clarified that they have electronically verified the mass-produced products from the plant and confirmed that the affected engines and vehicles meet the required engine performance output standards. As a result, there is no necessity to discontinue the use of the affected engines or vehicles, according to the company.
