E20 Petrol Supreme Court: The Supreme Court of India today dismissed a PIL challenging the rollout of the E20 petrol in the country. The PIL seeking the option of Ethanol-free petrol for consumers in the country was dismissed by the court, as it observed that the government’s decision to roll out E20 petrol was in line with the environmental goals and reducing dependence on the imports of crude oil.
Warranty To Remain Valid
The Ethanol Blend Program by the government has become a nationwide debate in recent times. While many owners have concerns regarding the reduction in performance and mileage of the vehicle, several car owners are anxious about the validity of the OEM warranty and insurance coverage on vehicles running on E20 fuel. The testing agency ARAI, oil companies, and auto component manufacturers recently came together to address concerns regarding the use of E20 petrol warranty and insurance. Speaking about the validity of the warranty, Prashant Kumar Banerjee (executive director, SIAM) said that, irrespective of a vehicle’s user manual, the warranty will remain valid for the E20 usage.
Does E20 Reduce Mileage?
As the Supreme Court has dismissed the PIL challenging the rollout of the Ethanol Blend Petrol, the E20 program will continue as planned across the nation. While the validity of the warranty and insurance coverage remains unaffected, E20 petrol’s impact on fuel efficiency can not be ignored. Press Trust of India (PTI) recently talked to some automotive engineers working with major carmakers. The automotive engineers believe that the use of ethanol-blended fuel will result in a drop in mileage ranging from 2-5 per cent. The experts also believe that the ethanol mixed with petrol may lead to erosion of gaskets, fuel pipes, and rubber hoses in old vehicles in the long term.
