The incident is reportedly from Nagaur, Rajasthan, where an electric car owner was issued a challan by the police for not having a valid PUC. The video was shared on the social media platform by a page named ‘Shiksha News Rajasthan’. The video features a white Tata Tiago, and the owner can be heard saying ‘How can an EV be issued a challan for not having a PUC?’ The policeman answer-’but our machine is saying so, and we issue challans only according to that.’ The video has gone viral, and more than 2 lakh people have seen it.

Is PUC Required For EV Car?
The answer to that question is as simple as the definition of an electric vehicle. An electric vehicle is powered by electricity, and it doesn’t produce any emissions. In simple words, it means that electric cars don’t pollute the environment, and thus, an electric car is not required to have a PUC. In fact, any electric vehicle is not required to have a Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC), unless it has been modified and features an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). Jokes apart, an EV doesn’t require a PUC, as per the law. So, how come the police are issuing challans to electric cars as per the system?

Can Police Issue Challan To EV For No PUC?
Legally, the police cannot issue a challan to an electric car for not carrying a valid PUC. But the policeman in the video wasn’t lying when he said that the ‘system’ or ‘Machine’ was showing that the vehicle didn’t have a PUC. While the law doesn’t require an EV to have a PUC, there is a slight overlap. The online ticketing system has a glitch, and in some cases, it shows that an electric vehicle is not having a valid PUC, and the police can issue a challan.
