Delhi and the National Capital Region (consisting of neighbouring districts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan) is undergoing a tough phase with an alarming increase in pollution levels, increasing Air Quality Index (AQI) and severe degradation in the air quality. The AQI in Delhi has reached hazardous levels, with Delhiites gasping for fresh air.

The Delhi government has also imposed multiple restrictions on the movement of several diesel and petrol vehicles apart from banning construction and demolition activities in the National Capital. BS-3 petrol, BS-4 diesel four-wheelers have been banned and the violators will be fined for Rs 20,000. Though the Delhi government announced to impose the odd-even scheme from November 13, it has said that it will take into account the directives of the Supreme Court on pollution while finalising odd-even car rationing scheme.

The Delhi government has also asked the residents to encourage car-pooling and usage of public transport to reduce the air pollution. As Delhi grapples with depleting air quality, here are some steps you can take to help combat the pollution menace.

Don’t Use Your ICE Vehicles For Small Distances

People often use their cars to go to a nearby store or other places where they could easily walk or ride a cycle for these short trips. This small initiative can help the environment by not producing harmful gases and they can also get some exercise which is good for their health.

Regular Servicing And Maintenance Of Your Vehicle

Getting your car checked and serviced regularly is essential for cleaner emissions. It's also important to make sure your vehicle pollution is under check. If you don't take proper care of your car or bike, it can release a lot of pollution which then contributes to making the air quality worse.

Use Public Transport

Another factor to keep in mind when trying to reduce vehicle pollution is the usage of public transportation whenever possible. If there's a metro or bus that directly goes where you want to go, it's better to pick that over driving your car. Fewer cars on the road leads to fewer emissions and less pollution.

Make Use Of Car-Pooling

Another way to combat the increasing air pollution is car-pooling which also helps in reducing the number of cars on the road. It is also a more pocket-friendly way to travel as a group of people who are all going to the same destination can share one car. Car-pooling helps in splitting the cost while also cutting down on vehicle pollution.

Switch-Off Car Engine When Not In Use

Another small initiative that can go a long way is that when you're stuck in traffic or waiting at a red light, it is ideal to turn off your car's engine. This helps cut down on emissions, saves fuel and also improves your vehicle's mileage.
