How Much Ethanol In Petrol:  Discussion around ethanol-blended fuel has remained one of the hottest topics in the country over the past few weeks. While social media is filled with misinformation, fake news, and fake videos regarding the topic, many are concerned about the level of ethanol present in different fuel types. Motorists and vehicle owners are seeking whether premium petrol products, such as Xp95 or Speed97, contain less ethanol than normal petrol. Here’s how much ethanol content is present in different petrol products sold in the country.

India And Different Petrol Products

In India, petrol is sold via retail fuel stations by public sector undertakings such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). While these PSUs sell normal petrol, they also offer premium petrol products such as Xp95 by IndianOil, Speed97 by BPCL, and Power99 by HPCL. The numbers in the name stand for the octane rating of the particular petrol product.

Octane Rating: What Does It Mean For You?

Standard petrol in India has an octane rating of 91 RON. Octane rating has nothing to do with a vehicle's fuel efficiency. Higher octane rating essentially means enhanced resistance to compression and lower engine knocking. This essentially means that a fuel with a higher octane rating will make engine operation smoother. While standard vehicles with non-turbocharged engines are advised to use normal petrol, vehicles with turbocharged engines or performance vehicles are advised to use higher octane fuel, such as Xp95, Speed97, or Power99.

Which Petrol Has How Much Ethanol?

Many might believe that different petrol products in India carry different levels of ethanol content, but that’s not the case. E20 petrol has become standard across the country, and all petrol products, including regular petrol, XP95, Speed97, and Power99, are mixed with 20 per cent ethanol. It is worth mentioning that IndianOil’s XP100 is the only petrol product that has 0 per cent ethanol content.
