GST Council Meet 2025: The 56th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, gave a green light to the next generation of GST reforms, thereby paving the way for the two main slabs of 5 and 18 per cent, along with a demerit rate of 40 per cent reserved for super luxury, sin, and demerit goods, like tobacco and pan masala. The revised changes, except for demerit goods, will come into effect on September 22.
