It's been 76 years since India got freed from the clutches of the British Colonial System to become a Sovereign and Independent nation. On August 15 in 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India's first prime minister, hoisted the national flag of India from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort signifying the rise of a new nation which is free from colonial domination. Numerous social, political, and cultural changes occurred in the years before India achieved independence in 1947 including the Automobile sector which saw a drastic shift.

Cars were still seen as a luxury at this period, mostly available to the wealthy sections of society. Since India was not a big manufacturer of cars at that time, luxury cars from some of the biggest names in the automobile industry including Rolls Royce were imported and used by only the rich. These vintage cars, despite their limited availability, had a big impact on the general population and contributed to developing a sense of belonging and unity. Let's explore those cars which were used in India before and after India's Independence.

Hindustan 10

One of the first automobiles built in India, this one was made by Hindustan Motors. It took on the significance of the Swadeshi movement and evolved into a representation of national pride and self-reliance.

1935 Delahaye 135MS

1925 Hispano-Suiza H6B

Although the Indian kings loved Rolls-Royces, several royal residences also used the Hispano-Suiza. One of them was used by the Maharaja of Mysore. The Geedee Museum in Coimbatore continues to preserve the Maharaja of Mysore's cars.

1931 Lancia Dilambda

The most powerful members of the Indian National Congress frequently drove Plymouth and Dodge vehicles to rallies and other events. They represented how various communities may come together in harmony for a common goal.

These cars served as more than just means of transportation; they were canvases on wheels decorated with national flags, slogans, and faces of freedom fighters. They created a platform for the general populace to show their enthusiasm for the movement, transforming the streets into rallies of unity and patriotism.
