Two West Virginia National Guard members were shot just blocks from the White House on Wednesday. The injured were rushed to the hospital and were in critical condition.
US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 500 additional National Guard members to the city after the shooting and has vowed to a strict action. On Early Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social and addressed the shooter as an animal, adding that he will "pay a very steep price."
In the same post, Trump shared an update on the condition of the injured guardsmen, saying both were critically wounded and admitted to two separate hospitals.
He said, "The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price".
"God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!" Trump added.
After the shooting was reported, FBI Director Kash Patel said the Guard members were hospitalized in critical condition. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said that it was a targeted shooting.
In an initial statement, the West Virginia governor said that the troops had died, but later clarified that his office was receiving conflicting reports about the medical conditions of the victims.
In a report, news agency The Associated Press cited a law enforcement official, saying that a suspect also was shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening. The report added that he was in custody.

"We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues," Gov. Patrick Morrisey said. As part of the investigation, the surveillance cameras are being checked and it is believed that the suspect approached one of the injured soldier and pulled out a gun. It is also believed that a soldier and the accused exchanged gunfire.
