Fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, who is reportedly living in Pakistan, has been in the news for the last couple of days. First, his name was mentioned by the gangster Anil Pandit, who emerged as a key suspect in the firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff on October 18. Now, Dawood took centre stage in a controversy linked to a UN special rapporteur's description of his D-company as an "India-based" criminal group.

What Is The UN D-Company Row?

On Wednesday, the United Nations (UN) created a controversy by calling the Dawood-led D-company an "India-based" criminal group, drawing India's strong objection. First Secretary in India's Permanent Mission to the UN, Raghoo Puri delivered the strong rebuttal on Wednesday in the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, responding to a report by Ben Saul, the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism.

The D-company's Dawood Ibrahim, has been wanted in India in connection with the Mumbai bomb blast 1993, which resulting in 257 deaths and over 1,400 injuries.

"Let me correct it for the record. This individual (Dawood) fled India much before the 2003 listing, and it was during this period from outside our country that he was listed for being associated with Al Qaeda and with Osama bin Laden," he said.

Dawood Resides In Pakistan: India

India said that Dawood resides in the same country where Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was found and killed, making a clear reference to Pakistan. He reportedly left India in 1984, fleeing to Dubai under pressure from rival gangs and police. The Indian government, on several occasions, reiterated its demand to the Government of Pakistan to hand over Dawood to India so that he can be prosecuted for the crimes committed by him. New Delhi also provided a dossier to Pakistan in 2015 to support New Delhi’s longstanding claim that the gangster was living in Pakistan. It is believed that he is living in Karachi, under the protection of Pakistan's intelligence agencies.

Lawrence Bishnoi Gang Claims To Act Against D-Company

Jailed Lawrence Bishnoi-led Bishnoi gang members claimed that they act against the D-Company. Recently, in the Shroff shooting case, its member, Pandit, who allegedly operates from the US, claimed that the actor was attacked because of his association with Bollywood star Salman Khan. In a purported audio clip, Pandit is heard claiming Shroff was attacked because he ignored warnings not to work with Khan. Pandit also claimed that Salman gets support from Dawood. He said his gang believes in Bhagat Singh's ideology and fights against enemies of the country. Pandit claimed that Dawood provides money to filmmakers and he uses that money to harm India through the drug syndicate.

While the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang claimed to target India's enemies, D-Company reportedly is involved in extortion and a drug syndicate. The founder of the Bishnoi Gang, Lawrence Bishnoi, has been behind bars since 2015, while D-Company's supremo is reportedly roaming free in Pakistan and using his syndicate against India. The way Bishnoi Gang members name Dawood, it is clear that D-Company is on the target list for Lawrence's men.

Eyes On Bollywood

In the past, the film industry has been a key centre for extortion by underworld gangs. In the 90s, there was a terror of D-Company in Bollywood, and extortion was the norm in the dream city. In 1997, D-Company members allegedly killed producer and singer Gulshan Kumar, establishing its extortion network in Mumbai. With Anil Pandit's claim that his gang has 200 active members in Mumbai, it indicates that the Bishnoi gang wants to establish its dominance in the Mumbai underworld, diminishing D-Company's influence. By attempting to attack Salman and now Shroff, the Bishnoi Gang adopted a similar line, posing a threat to law and order situation in the financial capital of the country.
