India is likely to see 1 crore Electric Vehicle (EV) sales a year and the segment is expected to generate about 5 crore jobs by 2030, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday. Addressing the 19th EV EXPO 2023, Gadkari, "As per the Vahan database, 34.54 lakh EVs are already registered in India." The Union Road Transport and Highways minister asserted that India has the potential to become number 1 EV maker in the world and the government is committed to making India a self-reliant country in clean energy production and mass application.

Gadkari said the government has also permitted retrofitting of existing polluting vehicles into hybrid and fully EVs. The regulations have been finalised and technology demonstrations done successfully, he added. He said the government intends to shift public transport and logistics to EVs.
Addressing the increasing EV demand in the country, in 2022, the number of electric cars registered increased by 178 per cent compared to the previous year at 41,675 units. In 2023, electric car sales continued to grow, showing a 41.5 percent increase month-on-month compared to September 2022. The top electric car brands in the country are Tata Motors, MG Motor, and Mahindra, with Tata consistently leading the market. After the recent launch of the new Nexon EV, Tata continued its lead by selling 6,020 EVs in September 2023, marking a 9.9 percent increase from the previous month.

Multiple automakers, both domestic and international, launched several EV models in India in 2023 that further strengthened the electric car segment in the country. This year, we saw the entry of premium EV models in India like the Lotus Eletre, BMW i7, Volvo C40 Recharge, Audi Q8 e-tron, Mini Cooper SE, BMW iX1 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. More affordable electric cars for a wider audience were also launched which included models like the popular Tata Nexon EV facelift, MG Comet, BYD Atto 3 and BYD E6. All these new launches in a single year are proof of the expanding EV segment in the country.
