International Driving Permit Process:  Are you planning a trip abroad and want to drive overseas? Many people believe that only the Indian driving license and the visa are enough to drive overseas. However, if you want to drive abroad, you will need to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) as per international rules.

What Is An IDP?

An IDP, or an International Driving Permit, is a globally recognised iteration of your driving license. An IDP is authorised under the UN Convention, and it simply translates your driving license credentials into multiple languages after confirming that you are a licensed driver in India. The IDP is accepted by more than 150 countries worldwide, and it makes it easier for foreign authorities to verify your details.

IDP: Validity & Details

The IDP includes details such as a photo, personal details (Name, address, mobile number, etc.), and vehicle category. Typically, the IDP remains valid for one year from the date of issuance, and it is essential to carry it along with your passport and Indian driving license to rent out a vehicle in foreign countries.

How To Apply For An IDP?

An IDP can be easily obtained by filling out Form 4A, available on the Parivahan Website. Documents, such as a copy of your Indian driving license, a medical certificate in Form 1A, a copy of your passport, proof of the visa, and 4 most recent passport-size photographs, are required to apply for an International Driving Permit. A prescribed fee of Rs 1000 will be required, and in certain cases, an Aadhar Card verification is also required. You will be required to book an appointment with your nearest RTO for verification, and once the application is verified, the IDP is sent to your registered address within 3 to 7 working days.
