Flag Code ACT 2002: India will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day tomorrow, on August 15, 2025. While most people celebrate the day by hoisting the flag at their houses and offices, holding cultural events, some people take the patriotic feeling a step ahead and place the national flag on their vehicles. But do you know it is not legal to do so? Let’s take a look at the rule, along with the punishment and monetary fine for putting the national flag on your vehicle.
Flag Code Of India
The Flag Code of India allows only a particular set of individuals to hoist the flag on their vehicles. As per the Flag Code of India only the President of India, Vice President of India, Governors and Lieutenant Governors of the States and Union Territories, Prime Minister of India, Cabinet Minister and Minister of States at the Center, Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers of the State and Union Territories, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Vice Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Speaker of Legislative Assemblies and Councils, Chief Justice of India, Judges of the Supreme Court, Chief Justices and Judges of High Courts, and Speakers of Indian Missions/Posts abroad, can hoist the flag code of India.

Penalty And Punishment
According to the Flag Code of India 2002, any other person except the specified dignitaries cannot display the national flag on their vehicles. Flags displayed on cars are highly restricted, and the National Honour Act, 1971, has provisions of monetary penalties and punishments, among other legal consequences for breaking the rules. As per the National Honour Act, anyone who breaks the law can be punished with imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both.
