Traffic Laws In India: Whether driving a car or riding a bike, adherence to traffic rules is important to ensure commuters’ safety. Often, tragic accidents take place whenever traffic rules are broken. Therefore, properly understanding the traffic rules is also very significant. Sometimes people misinterpret some very common traffic rules. One such example is driving in slippers.
Driving In Slippers: Is It Illegal?
Many people believe that driving a car or riding a two-wheeler is slippers in considered illegal in India, which is not true. As per the Motor Vehicle Act, there is no provision for imposing fines or issuing a challan if anyone is driving a vehicle while wearing slippers. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, in 2019, even tweeted to make people aware of the misinterpretation of the traffic rules.
Driving In Slippers: Is It Safe?
As informed earlier, there is no provision in the Motor Vehicle Act regarding the fine or issuing a challan for driving in slippers. Therefore, the Traffic Police officials cannot issue a challan for the same reason. But is it safe to drive or ride in slippers? Wearing slippers while riding or driving can be dangerous, as they offer less grip on the pedals, gear levers, and even on the roads. Hence, it is a better practice to wear shoes while driving or riding.
