Maruti Suzuki has been making changes in their production strategies by introducing an electric powertrain for its recently showcased eVX at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. Now, media reports have suggested that Maruti Suzuki is also mulling to replace its peppy K12 engines, which the Indian manufacturer has been using in its cars for a long time.

As per media reports, Suzuki is set to replace the 4-cylinder K12 engine with a three-cylinder Z-series engine, which will reportedly be introduced in the new generation Swift, which was showcased at the Japan Mobility Show. The new engine, touted to be called the Z12, will be a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated one and will replace the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder K12 engine.

Though the downsizing of the cylinder isn't much appreciated by the motorheads, the engine is expected to generate similar power output just like the 4-cylinder engine. However, the actual specifications of the Z series engine are yet to be officially revealed by Maruti Suzuki. Despite a cylinder less, the Z series engine is expected to generate more torque in comparison to the K12 engines. Now, with each cylinder at 400cc in capacity, the volumetric efficiency and torque could improve.

Maruti Suzuki is also aiming to get more mileage in their cars, which could possibly be the reason behind the downsizing. As per reports, the Z12 engine will lose the free-revving nature of the K12 engines and it is more inclined towards stronger pulling power at the bottom-end since its primary usage will be in the city. Apart from the new-gen Swift, the Z12 1.2-litre engine is expected to be incorporated in the Baleno, Fronx, Ignis and Eeco in the near future.
