MARUTI Suzuki WagonR, one of the most popular and oldest hatchbacks produced by the India-based company, received one star in the global NCAP rating. Further breaking out on the safety ratings for adults and children, the car gets zero stars for child safety and one star for adult safety. Interestingly, the car has been tested in 2019 as well and surprisingly bagged two stars out of five.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR received a rating of 19.69 out of 34 points, with 6.7 points awarded to the frontal offset deformable barrier test and 13 points awarded to the side movable deformable barrier test. The car was not tested for side pole impact because it lacked side airbags.

During the front impact testing, the authorities determined that the driver received good neck protection and adequate head protection, while the chest received weak protection and the knees received marginal protection. The knees also get marginal protection.

Meanwhile, the passenger side receives an adequate mark for the chest, a good mark for the head and neck, and an unstable mark for the foot.

Speaking of the child crash test rating, the child protection was not awarded a good remark as the car lacks ISOFIX and CRS. Additionally, the car also lacks three-point seatbelts for seating position. The child's safety would be put at risk if the airbag were to deploy during an impact.

"Since 2014, Global NCAP has been encouraging a market shift in India for safer cars," said Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP. “We are pleased with the positive response from Indian automakers as well as some global automakers. Despite some limited progress, we have yet to see this safety commitment implemented in the most popular Maruti Suzuki models. Given that six airbags are becoming a mandatory requirement for new models sold in India, Global NCAP is particularly concerned that Maruti Suzuki does not even offer this requirement as a customer option,” he added.
