End Of Life Vehicles: Delhi government’s decision to ban end-of-life vehicles faced backlash from the public, and the state government decided to move to the Supreme Court. Now, the Supreme Court on Tuesday temporarily suspended any coercive action against the overage vehicle owners. Let’s take a closer look at the whole matter and the Supreme Court’s decision.
State Government Vs Supreme Court
The CAQM (Commission for Air Quality Management) announced a ban on end-of-life vehicles starting July 1, 2025. The state government initially supported the decision but cited public outrage and challenges in the enforcement of the rule the state government put a pause on the old vehicle ban. After the severe public outrage, the Delhi government challenged the Supreme Court’s 2018 order, which was in support of the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) suggestion old vehicle ban. The Delhi administration requested a review of the policy framework and suggested that the age shouldn’t be the parameter for a ban on any vehicle, and the pollution level should be the limit.

Supreme Court’s Decision
The Supreme Court of India agreed with the state government’s remarks and said that it is significant that an inclusive examination should be done before taking any action. The bench in its order said, "Issue notice. Returnable in four weeks. In the meantime, no coercive steps to be taken on grounds that they are 10 years (diesel) and 15 years old (petrol)."
Temporary Relief
The Supreme Court’s decision to put a halt to the old vehicle ban is temporary. The Supreme Court directed authorities to review the policy framework and restrictions that bar 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 15-year-old petrol vehicles on the roads of the national capital. The Supreme Court has rescheduled the hearing after four weeks, and this means that no action will be taken against end-of-life vehicle owners for the next month.
