The Indian women’s cricket team followed the Indian men’s team’s stand and refused to accept the Asia Cup 2026 trophy after beating Sri Lanka in the final.

Despite BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia being seen shaking hands with ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, the Indian team did not take part in the trophy presentation.

Saikia has now revealed why the BCCI took the decision, insisting that it was a conscious institutional call based on the prevailing circumstances and sentiments in India.

Speaking about the decision, Saikia said that the BCCI had already communicated its position to the Asian Cricket Council before the trophy presentation.

“We had taken a conscious decision considering all prevailing aspects, and our position had been communicated to the ACC in advance, that the Indian team would not participate in the trophy presentation under the circumstances,” Saikia said.

He further explained that the decision was not aimed at the players, the tournament or cricket itself, but was based on the circumstances surrounding the presentation.

“Given the circumstances and the sentiments prevailing in the country, the BCCI felt that it would not be appropriate for the team to receive the trophy in the proposed manner,” he added.

“This was a firm institutional decision, reflective of the position we have maintained, and was not directed at the players, the tournament or the sport,” Saikia further stated.

BCCI Secretary Proud Of Indian Women’s Team

While explaining the decision, Saikia also highlighted that the focus remained on India’s achievement on the field. The Indian women defeated Sri Lanka in the final to lift the Asia Cup title.

“The Indian women’s team has done what matters most, they have won the Asia Cup through their outstanding performance on the field. We as well as whole nation are immensely proud of the team, and the achievement belongs to the players and to Indian cricket,” he remarked.

Amol Muzumdar Backs BCCI Stand

India head coach Amol Muzumdar also confirmed that the team fully supported the BCCI’s decision.

“That stand has been taken by the BCCI and we stand by it. For us, this tournament is over. We are the champions,” Muzumdar told reporters.

The India coach also made it clear that the team has moved on from the controversy and is now looking ahead to its next assignment.
