India head coach Amol Muzumdar opened up about the controversy surrounding the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final. Harmanpreet Kaur-led India beat Sri Lanka by 72 runs on Sunday to win a record eighth Asia Cup title. However, the celebrations were followed by a controversy as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side did not collect the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, was present at the presentation ceremony in Dubai.

The decision was similar to what happened during last year’s men’s Asia Cup final. Suryakumar Yadav-led India had also refused to take the trophy from Naqvi after beating Pakistan in the final.

‘That stand has been taken by the BCCI’

Speaking after India’s title win, Muzumdar said the decision was taken by the BCCI and the team fully supports it.

“That stand has been taken by the BCCI and we stand by it. For us, this tournament is over. We are the champions,” Muzumdar told reporters during the press conference.

The India coach also made it clear that the team has already moved on from the controversy and is now looking ahead to its next assignment.

“It was on the big board that India ‘Champions of Asia Cup 2026’. This tournament is officially over for us. Now, we look forward to the Asian Games,” he added.

Naqvi left the stadium immediately after presenting the award to Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu, but unlike last year, he moved away without carrying the trophy.

The diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have been frozen ever since last year’s Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor.
