Harmanpreet Kaur-led India refused to take the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi after winning the final against Sri Lanka.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Dubai on Sunday to lift the Asia Cup for a record eighth time. But the celebrations were followed by another controversy during the trophy presentation.

The Indian team did not turn up for the official presentation ceremony at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, with Naqvi present on the stage to hand over the trophy.

The chant quickly drew attention online, adding another talking point to the scenes that followed India’s title win. Here is the video:

Why did India refuse to take the trophy from Naqvi?

India’s decision was linked to the ongoing tensions between the two countries. The team had already made it clear that it did not want to receive the trophy from Naqvi.

This was also not the first time India had taken such a stand.

A similar situation took place during the men’s Asia Cup final in September 2025. India defeated Pakistan in the final but did not immediately collect the trophy and medals.

The Indian side had asked for the trophy to be presented by the Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman instead of Naqvi. However, the request was not accepted, with Naqvi insisting that the Indian captain should collect the trophy from him.

The disagreement eventually led to India leaving the ceremony without the trophy.

The latest incident in Dubai has once again brought the India-Naqvi standoff into focus, even as the Indian women’s team celebrated its record eighth Asia Cup title.
