Petrol Pump Scams: Petrol pump frauds are very common in India, and often customers are cheated by the pump operators. While overcharging and not filling the right amount of fuel are the most common types of scams, sometimes adulterated fuel is also filled, which might harm the engine of your vehicle. Therefore, it is necessary to be vigilant and pay attention whenever you are visiting a petrol pump. Here we are sharing 5 tips that will help you save yourself from getting cheated.
Always Check The Reading
It is necessary to always check the meter before the attendant starts filling petrol. Always ask the attendant to reset the meter to zero. Sometimes the attendant adjusts the meter to a higher value than asked for, and when a customer tells them the amount, they start filling the petrol from that reading itself. This causes short-fueling, and the customer never gets the same amount of fuel he paid for.

Look At The Hand
Sometimes petrol pump operators use this trick to cheat the customer. This one trick is also associated with the short-fueling, but this is a little advanced, and the customer needs to pay attention to the hand of the attendant. If the attendant constantly pushes the clutch of the nozzle, it creates an airlock inside the pipe coming from the fuel pump. The machine will keep reading the air present in the pipe, whereas the fuel getting to your tank will be reduced.
No Round Figures
Mostly, people choose a round figure at a fuel station, asking the attendant to fill their tank for Rs 100, Rs 1000, or Rs 2000 worth of fuel. If you also do this, you should consider changing the habit. Some of the fuel pumps are tampered with a chip inside them, which constantly reads the round figure and decreases the amount of fuel by 10%. For example, if the fuel price is Rs 100 per litre and you ask the operator to fill Rs 2000 worth of fuel, but the machine has been tampered with the chip, it will show you that 20 litres of fuel worth Rs 2000 were filled into your vehicle’s tank, whereas there would be only 18 litres of fuel inside the tank (The tampered machine would cut down your fuel by 10% which in this case would be 2 litres).

Check The Density
This one tip can save thousands of rupees, along with some mental stress for you. Most people don’t even look at the small screen given near the reading meter. This small screen shows the Density of fuel, petrol, or diesel, and it is necessary to check, as this one mistake can harm the heart (The Engine) of your vehicle. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the density of petrol should be between 720-775 kg/m3, and the density of diesel should be between 810-845 kg/m3. If the density shown on the machine is less than this, you can raise a complaint.
Keep An Eye On The Pipe
Keeping an eye on the pipe connecting the nozzle and the machine can also save you from getting cheated. Sometimes operators remove the nozzle from the tank as soon as the machine stops. This can also cause short-fueling as it takes some seconds for the remaining fuel in the pipe to get to the tank. Whenever you go to the fuel station, ask the operator not to remove the nozzle from the tank and wait for around 5 seconds after the machine stops.
