Google Maps has recently rolled out a new feature within the app that allows users to know the ‘more fuel-efficient route’ while driving around a city or on a long road trip. This feature has been introduced, keeping in mind the continuously increasing prices of fuels such as petrol and diesel. This feature is currently available in specific countries like the United States, Canada and some European nations as well, however, it is expected that this ‘more fuel-efficient route’ feature will soon be rolled out in India.
This Google Maps feature enables users to specify the type of engine in their vehicle. It then calculates the most fuel or energy efficient route for the vehicle. As per Google, when this feature is activated, Maps consider fuel or energy efficiency along with factors like real-time traffic and road conditions to determine the best route. Once the feature is switched on, the feature provides the fastest alternative route. However, it's worth noting that this feature doesn't include stops needed to refuel or recharge an electric vehicle.

Enabling the fuel-efficient route option is a simple process, open the Google Maps app on your smartphone and if this feature is available in your location, tap on the profile icon in the top right corner to access settings. From there, go to the navigation settings and find Route Options. Activate two specific options: first, opt for eco-friendly routing by selecting "Prefer fuel-efficient routes," and second, specify the engine type. After these steps, your fuel-efficient route feature will be activated. The app recognizes vehicles powered by petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles (EVs). If you skip this step of identifying your vehicle fuel type, the app defaults to petrol as the fuel type and provides alternative fuel-efficient route options accordingly.
