Tamil Nadu EV Policy:  The Tamil Nadu government recently announced that it has extended 100 per cent EV road tax exemption till December 31, 2027. The move is a part of the state’s push towards electric vehicles, and it is aimed at providing relief to the EV manufacturers and buyers. Let’s take a look at how this move is expected to benefit EV buyers and manufacturers in the state.

Huge Savings For Buyers

The government introduced the EV road tax exemption under the Tamil Nadu EV Policy in 2019, and it was initially valid till December 31, 2022. The government later extended the policy till December 31, 2025, and a recent government order has now extended the policy for two more years, till December 31, 2027. From consumers perspective, the move will provide huge savings as the road tax forms a significant part of the electric car’s on-road price.

What It Means For Manufacturers?

While the move will provide prospective EV buyers with huge savings, it is also expected to provide enhanced planning certainty to the manufacturers. India is a growing EV market, and any electric vehicle manufacturer is required to set up parts suppliers, factories, and charging infrastructure to efficiently operate in the country. Such massive planning and expansion can be completed only under multi-year timelines, and small incentive periods might muddle with the investment decisions. In contrast, a policy with a longer timeline changes the investment-related calculations.

Which Vehicles Are Included

The adoption of electric vehicles is growing in Tamil Nadu. As per industry estimates, the state has already reached around 7.8 per cent EV adoption in 2025. The recently announced EV road tax exemption move by the government applies to electric two-wheelers, along with electric four-wheelers, in the state.
