India EV Sales 2025: BYD, the Chinese electric car manufacturer, zoomed past Elon Musk-led Tesla to become the world’s largest electric car seller. In 2025, BYD sold a total of 2.26 million electric cars, whereas Musk-led Tesla managed to sell a total of 1.63 million electric cars. Here’s what Elon Musk thinks about the Chinese electric car manufacturer.
What Elon Musk Thinks About BYD?
Elon Musk was asked the same question around a decade ago in an interview. Musk was asked whether BYD could become a serious competitor for Tesla in the electric car market. At that time, Musk laughed and replied ‘Have you seen their cars?’ Musk also said ‘I don’t think BYD has a great product. Their technology is not very strong, and as a company, they have severe problems in their homeland, China. I think their focus is, and rightly should be, on making sure that they do not die in China.’ Now, a decade later, it seems like Musk’s mockery of the Chinese EV manufacturer has backfired.
Tesla And BYD In India
BYD entered the Indian market in 2007, and it has completed around 18 years in the country. Elon Musk-led Tesla, on the other hand, entered the Indian market in July 2025. BYD offers a total of 4 models: the Atto 3 electric SUV, the Seal sedan, the Sealion 7 electric SUV, and the eMax 7 electric MPV, in India. Tesla currently offers its Model Y electric SUV in India in two primary variants— a standard Rear Wheel Drive model and a long-range Rear Wheel Drive model. BYD secured the 5th position in the EV sales chart in India in 2025 by selling a total of 5,122 units.
