Why Are Electric Scooters Catching Fire: Electric bikes and scooters have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, incidents of these vehicles catching fire have also emerged as a significant concern. Various factors contribute to these fires, especially severe heat conditions. Let’s delve into the main causes behind these incidents and how to prevent them.

Short Circuit

One of the most common reasons for fires in electric bikes and scooters is a short circuit. A short circuit can occur if the battery's connections are not secure. These vehicles often use chargers with capacities of up to seven kilowatts, which can lead to an increased risk of short circuits if the connections are loose or improperly maintained.

Battery Overheating

In many parts of India, extreme heat is a common issue. High temperatures can significantly affect the performance of electric two-wheelrs. When the temperature rises, the battery can overheat, leading to potential fire hazards. It's crucial for owners to be aware of this risk, especially during peak summer months.

Use of Incorrect Chargers

Another critical factor is the use of wrong chargers. Each electric vehicle is designed with a specific type of battery and compatible charger. Using a charger meant for a different model or battery type can lead to mismatched electrical limits, increasing the likelihood of overheating and fire.

No Battery Cover

Batteries generate a considerable amount of heat while in use. To manage this heat, battery covers and heat sinks are essential. Unfortunately, some manufacturers may opt to drop these components to reduce the overall weight of the battery, making it easier to transport. However, this can lead to not cooling down properly, raising the risk of a fire.

High Temperatures

Electric scooters usually run on lithium batteries and sometimes gasoline. Gasoline can catch fire if it gets hotter than 210 degrees Celsius and lithium batteries can catch fire at 135 degrees Celsius. To avoid this, it's a good idea to park electric bikes and scooters in shady or cool places during hot summer months.
