Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is determined and is continuously showcasing efforts to transition India into a green economy by advocating for significant policy changes in the automotive sector. He aims to eliminate petrol and diesel vehicles entirely from the country's roads, emphasising the potential benefits for farmers, rural communities and youth employment. Gadkari's vision includes slashing GST on hybrid vehicles to promote their adoption and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

In an interview with PTI, Gadkari affirmed his commitment to achieving this ambitious goal, acknowledging the challenges but expressing confidence in its feasibility. "One hundred per cent," he said, adding, "It is difficult but not impossible. This is my vision". He highlighted the staggering amount India spends on fuel imports and proposed redirecting these funds towards rural development initiatives. The proposal to lower GST on hybrid vehicles and flex engines has been submitted to the Finance Ministry for consideration, reflecting the government's proactive stance on promoting green mobility. Gadkari believes that by promoting the use of biofuels, India can significantly reduce its reliance on fuel imports.

While environmental activists commend Gadkari's efforts to increase green mobility, they caution against continued dependence on fossil fuels for electricity generation. Avinash Chanchal from Greenpeace India stressed the importance of transitioning to renewable energy alongside electric vehicles to address climate challenges effectively. He said, "In India, we are still heavily dependent on a fossil fuel-based energy system to power electric cars, and this needs to be changed. There is an urgent need to ensure 100 per cent renewable energy alongside electric vehicles to tackle the climate crisis.”

Gadkari has been advocating for alternative fuels since 2004 and remains optimistic about achieving significant progress in the next five to seven years. He envisions a future where electric vehicles and biofuels dominate the automotive landscape, supported by advancements in technology and changing consumer preferences. Several auto companies, including Bajaj, TVS, and Hero, are already planning to manufacture vehicles equipped with flex engines, indicating a shift towards more sustainable transportation solutions. Gadkari cited examples of hydrogen-powered cars and trucks introduced by leading manufacturers, highlighting the growing momentum towards alternative fuel adoption.

In conclusion, Gadkari is confident that India is on the turning point of a revolution in the automotive industry, with the potential to end fuel imports and achieve self-reliance. He said, “Definitely, a revolution is taking place. The fuel imports will end and this country will become self-reliant - Atmanirbhar Bharat. I strongly believe in this.” His vision aligns with the concept of "Atmanirbhar Bharat," emphasising India's ability to lead the way in sustainable development.
