Patna Police on Sunday arrested former MLA and JD(U) candidate from Mokama, Anant Singh, in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj worker Dular Chand Yadav that took place on Thursday.

A police team led by Patna SSP conducted a raid at Singh’s residence in Barh and took him into custody. Singh had been under surveillance following Yadav’s killing, which reportedly followed a recent clash between Yadav and Singh’s supporters in Mokama. He was later brought to Patna for interrogation.

Along with Anant Singh, police also arrested two others, Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, who were reportedly present at the scene during the incident. All three accused are expected to be produced before the magistrate soon.

Who Is Anant Singh?

Anant Singh, also known as “Chhote Sarkar,” is a former MLA from Mokama and a well-known political figure in Bihar with a reputation that spans multiple parties. His career has been marked by both political success and legal controversies.

He won the 2020 Bihar Assembly election from Mokama as a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate but was later disqualified after being convicted under the Arms Act by the MP-MLA court in Patna and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

In the subsequent 2022 by-election, his wife, Neelam Devi, contested on an RJD ticket and retained the seat. However, she switched allegiance to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) during the February 2024 floor test of the Nitish Kumar-led government.

Later, Anant Singh was acquitted in the Arms Act case due to a lack of evidence. In early 2025, he was booked in the Nauranga-Jalalpur firing case following a clash with the Sonu-Monu gang, surrendered to authorities, and was sent to Patna’s Beur Jail before being released on bail.

He has now returned to active politics as a Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] candidate, marking a new phase in his political journey.

Dular Chand Yadav Murder Case

Dular Chand Yadav, a Jan Suraaj Party worker, died from a ruptured lung and multiple rib fractures while campaigning for party candidate Piyush Priyadarshi in Mokama near Patna on Thursday. The autopsy confirmed that his death was not caused by a gunshot, a finding that has intensified political tensions in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections.

Earlier, police filed three FIRs in connection with the incident and arrested two people. One, lodged by Yadav’s grandson, named Anant Singh and four others. Another came from the rival group, while the third was filed by police based on their own probe. Anant Singh claimed the attack was part of a conspiracy by former MP Suraj Bhan Singh, husband of RJD candidate Veena Devi.

"We were meeting people and asking for votes when supporters of another candidate started shouting slogans. I told my supporters not to respond and moved ahead. Suraj Bhan’s people attacked our vehicles. Dular Chand was the first to raise his hand. This entire game is being played by Suraj Bhan Singh," Singh had claimed.
