Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: The Election Commission of India has begun intensive revision of the Bihar electoral roll this week as it aims to verify each and every voter through a door-to-door voter verification campaign. The ECI on Saturday said that out of the total 7.89 crore electors in the state, 4.96 crore, who were on the rolls as on January 1, 2003, only have to fill and submit the new enumeration form. The rest 2.93 crore voters will have to produce their documents to establish their citizenship. This 2.93 crore translates to a whopping share of voters, standing at 37 per cent.
“Out of the existing 7,89,69,844 electors, 4.96 crore electors, whose names are already in the last intensive revision of Electoral Roll on 01.01.2003, have to simply verify so, fill the Enumeration Form and submit it,” the EC said in a statement on Saturday.
The move has been undertaken to eliminate irregularities in the voter list by launching a comprehensive verification drive in Bihar. On Saturday, the Commission simultaneously initiated intensive verification of the voter list across all 243 assembly constituencies in the state.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been tasked with conducting the verification and will be relieved of their basic responsibilities until the process is complete. Divisional commissioners and district magistrates have been instructed to ensure compliance.
The Commission emphasised that the Constitution of India is supreme, and all citizens, political parties, and the Election Commission itself follow its provisions. According to Article 326 of the Constitution, only Indian citizens above 18 years of age and residents of the constituency are eligible to become voters.
The Commission has reached out to recognised national and state-level political parties, requesting them to engage their booth-level agents (BLAs) in the verification process. Currently, these parties have appointed around 1.54 lakh BLAs, and they can appoint more as needed.
To facilitate verification, messages are being sent to the registered mobile numbers of 5.74 lakh voters in Bihar. This initiative aims to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the voter list. Notably, this is the first such intensive verification drive in Bihar since 2003.
