Bihar News: In a significant boost to the state’s rail and road infrastructure, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved railway and highway projects worth a total of Rs 6,014 crore in Bihar. Earlier, on September 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects, including a thermal power plant at Pirpainti and a new terminal building at Purnea Airport.
Key Road Infrastructure Projects Approved For Bihar
- The Union Cabinet approved the construction of a 78.94 km four-lane highway on the Sahebganj-Areraj-Bettiah section of National Highway (NH) 139W. The project, worth Rs 3,822.31 crore, will be built under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and is expected to boost connectivity between Patna and Bettiah.

- “It will link key districts including Vaishali, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran and West Champaran, opening access to agricultural zones, industrial hubs, and religious tourism circuits,” Hindustan Times quoted an official as saying.
- Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the project is aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion and enabling faster movement of goods and passengers across the region.
- The four-lane highway is also expected to boost economic activity and strengthen cross-border linkages with Nepal.
Key Rail Infrastructure Projects Approved For Bihar
- In addition to this, the Union Cabinet approved the doubling of the Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya railway line. Spanning 104 km in Central Bihar, the Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya railway line will be doubled at a cost of Rs 2,192 crore to strengthen rail connectivity across Bihar.
- “The initiatives are expected to generate jobs during construction and support long-term regional growth once operational,” the official added.
- Earlier this month, the Union Cabinet approved the construction of the Mokama-Munger section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur high-speed corridor, along with the doubling of the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat rail line. The doubling of the railway line aims to strengthen connectivity across Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
